Is It Cake? Netflix guide: Host Mikey Day, gameplay, seasons, and all holiday & themed specials

Is It Cake? is an American game show-style cooking competition series created by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, and hosted by Mikey Day. It premiered on Netflix on March 18, 2022. In each episode, skilled contestants bake and decorate hyper-realistic cakes that mimic everyday objects, aiming to fool a panel of celebrity judges. The winner of each episode takes home $5,000 and gets a shot at an extra $5,000 by correctly identifying which of two identical-looking stacks of cash is real—and which is made of cake.

The image above displays a glowing neon sign against a dark, starry background that resembles outer space, featuring scattered white specks like distant stars and faint light flares. At the top center, a small red rectangular Netflix logo with white text is visible. Below it, large, bold capital letters spell out “IS IT CAKE?” in a futuristic, outlined neon style with a color gradient shifting from bright blue and purple on the edges to a lighter, almost white fill in the center, creating a luminous halo effect. The question mark at the end is particularly prominent, matching the glowing style of the text. The overall composition has a cinematic, promotional feel reminiscent of a Netflix show title card.

About host Mikey Day

Mikey Day (born Michael William Day on March 20, 1980, in Orange County, California) is an accomplished American actor, comedian, writer, and producer. He is best known as a longtime cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL), where he started as a writer in the 2013–14 season before becoming a featured player in 2016 and a repertory cast member in 2018. Day gained widespread recognition for memorable sketches like the viral “Haunted Elevator (Ft. David S. Pumpkins)” with Tom Hanks and has created popular impressions and characters throughout his tenure on the show.

Prior to SNL, he honed his skills with the Groundlings improv troupe in Los Angeles and was a cast member on MTV’s Wild ‘N Out for seven seasons. He also served as an on-air correspondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Jay Leno Show, and has writing credits that include co-writing the 2021 film Home Sweet Home Alone.

Despite having zero professional baking experience, Day was perfectly cast as host of Is It Cake?. He first discovered the viral cake challenge through his manager and was immediately hooked by the universal “human desire… to pick out the ‘disguised something.’” His quick wit, genuine reactions, playful energy, and everyman charm have become a highlight of the series, making him a fan favorite even as he continues his work on SNL.

Day secretly married actress Paula Christensen (known for roles in Modern Family and FBI) in late 2024 after more than a decade together; their son, Abbott (born August 2012), served as best man at the intimate ceremony. The family keeps a relatively low profile, though Day often shares humorous parenting stories about raising a teenager while balancing comedy and television.

The show draws inspiration from the viral “Is It Cake?” internet challenge that exploded on YouTube and TikTok, where creators present meticulously crafted cakes disguised as common items and challenge viewers to guess if they’re real or fake.

Seasons and specials

Netflix renewed the series for a second season in June 2022. Titled Is It Cake, Too?, it premiered on June 30, 2023. A third season, Is It Cak3?, followed on March 29, 2024. The main series was renewed for a fourth season in 2024 (specific release date still pending as of early 2026).

The show has expanded successfully into themed specials that bring back fan-favorite bakers and add seasonal flair:

  • Is It Cake? Holiday (Season 1, released November 28, 2024): A four-episode all-star special featuring nine standout bakers from the first three seasons. They crafted replicas of festive items like reindeer, nutcrackers, wreaths, ice skates, and more. Guest judges included Rachel Bloom, Wayne Brady, Sebastian Maniscalco, Hannah Berner, Tiffany Haddish, Devon Walker, Terry Crews, Punkie Johnson, and Randall Park. Episodes featured titles such as “All-Star Cakemas!”, “Snow Many Cakes,” and a finale focused on holiday feasts.
  • Is It Cake? Holiday (Season 2, released November 25, 2025): The holiday edition returned with three episodes, mixing returning alumni with new talent in jolly, wintry challenges. It embraced broader holiday themes while keeping the core deception gameplay intact. The prize pool reached up to $75,000 across the episodes.
  • Is It Cake? Halloween (released October 8, 2025): A four-episode spooky special with nine top cake artists competing in creepy-themed rounds. Bakers created convincing replicas of Halloween staples like creepy dolls, clowns, ravens, and other eerie objects. Episode titles included “Cakes to Die For” and “Gettin’ Witchy With It!”. Guest judges featured comedians and actors such as Pete Holmes, Chelsea Peretti, Ravi V., Ron Funches, Whitney Cummings, and Yvonne Orji. Mikey Day hosted the trick-or-treat showdown for cash prizes and Halloween bragging rights.
  • Is It Cake? Valentines (released February 4, 2026): A one-episode romantic special that introduced a fresh twist—three real-life baking couples teamed up to create swoonworthy, ultrarealistic cakes. They competed to fool celebrity judges (including appearances by Ashlee Simpson & Evan Ross and Casey Wilson & David Caspe) while also trying to deceive each other. Titled “Baked With Love,” the episode included all-new games, love-themed object challenges, and interactive segments designed for home viewers. It delivered a sweeter, collaborative-yet-competitive “date night” atmosphere. Participating couples represented various cake businesses from around the country.

These specials have been warmly received for their creative themes, returning talent, celebrity judges, and fun seasonal energy while staying true to the show’s signature mix of baking artistry and clever deception.

Gameplay

Each episode revolves around a chosen object theme. Three contestants have eight hours to bake and decorate a cake that perfectly replicates the selected item. Celebrity judges then face three separate displays, each containing five identical-looking versions of the object—with exactly one being a real cake in every group. If the judges correctly identify the cake, its baker is eliminated from that episode.

When multiple bakers successfully fool the judges, the winner is determined by overall cake quality and realism. The episode winner earns $5,000 and can try to double it by spotting which of two cash bundles is actually cake. A wrong guess rolls the extra money into the next episode’s prize pool.

Top performers from the season’s episodes advance to a finale for a chance to win $50,000. Importantly, the show does not fully eliminate contestants mid-season—all eight bakers typically remain, observe, and sometimes assist (especially in finale prep). Specials often adapt the format for all-stars, couples, or holiday-specific rules.

Production

Is It Cake? is produced by Alfred Street Industries, the company founded by creators Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz. A dedicated “cake lab” team, led by cake artist Monika Stout, creates the ultra-realistic “hero” cakes used in the judging segments (“Find That Cake” and “Cake or Cash”).

All cakes featured are made with real, edible ingredients, though they are usually discarded after filming for hygiene and practical reasons.

The format cleverly blends impressive baking skill, artistic deception, lighthearted competition, and celebrity reactions, resulting in a visually stunning and entertaining watch. Whether you’re tuning into the main seasons or the festive specials packed with holiday cheer, spooky surprises, or romantic vibes, the question that keeps everyone guessing is always the same: Is it cake?
