The Comoros archipelago
The Comoros archipelago comprises four main islands aligned along a northwest–southeast axis at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel, between Mozambique and Madagascar. Although still widely known by their French names, the islands are officially referred to by their Swahili names by the Comorian government: Grande Comore (Njazidja), Mohéli (Mwali), Anjouan (Nzwani), and Mayotte (Mahoré). The islands lie relatively far apart—Grande Comore is about 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Mayotte, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Mohéli, and 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Anjouan—and the scarcity of good harbors makes transportation and communication challenging.
