🦛 Meet the newest member of our herd, a 450-pound male pygmy hippopotamus named Silas. He moved here from Omaha, NE in September and has been getting to know his new home behind scenes. Silas made his public debut on Monday, Nov. 23.
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens recognized Manatee Awareness Month in a prominent way, by releasing a female manatee in Daytona Beach waters Thursday after she spent three months at the Manatee Critical Care Center.
Across the world, the equivalent of 27 soccer fields is cleared every minute for agriculture and logging – threatening wildlife and damaging crucial ecosystems. In Costa Rica, camera traps are working to combat this – helping to both record animals such as jaguars, pumas, tapirs and armadillos, while also helping to monitor the health of the ecosystem. In addition, camera trapping is also attracting tourists, which boosts local income – allowing the community and biodiversity to exist in harmony.
