Here they come! It’s almost springtime in North America, and beloved migratory birds like the Painted Bunting(Passerina ciris), Rufous Hummingbird(Selasphorus rufus), and Canada Warbler(Cardellina canadensis) are returning to North America to breed and raise their young.
But many of the migratory species we all love are disappearing — fast. What if some spring morning we no longer heard the ethereal song of the Wood Thrush(Hylocichla mustelina), or witnessed the incredible aerial acrobatics of a Common Nighthawk(Chordeiles minor) diving for insects overhead?
The journeys of migratory birds are fraught with danger, and many of the warblers, tanagers, flycatchers, and other birds en route now will never make it to their breeding territories.
People are the cause of many of the threats birds face such as habitat loss, free-roaming cats, pesticides, and glass windows – but we can also make the world safer for birds in the habitats around us, like our yards and local parks.

American Bird Conservancy stands up for birds across the Americas. We halt bird extinctions, conserve vital habitats, eliminate key threats, and build the capacity of our partners.
