SeaWorld | Cold Stunned Turtle Rescue Update

Extreme weather patterns have wreaked havoc in Texas and other parts of the country. SeaWorld San Antonio’s rescue team has been helping rescue over 100 turtles (and counting) along the Texas coastline. Turtles are cold-blooded and cannot regulate their own body temperatures, leaving them at increased risk of death when cold weather occurs.

✈️Incoming! 🐢 On Monday, December 14, 2020, four cold-stunned loggerhead turtles were flown in from New England to stay with us for a period of time. Sea Turtle Rescue Flight

On Monday, Dec. 7, 120 sea turtles were flown to Texas after being found on Cape Cod, Massachusetts beaches suffering from hypothermia and other complications in recent weeks. Staff from NOAA Fisheries and the New England Aquarium helped load the turtles on to the plane before they arrived in Texas. They will receive expert treatment and care from seven facilities in Texas, including the Houston Zoo, and be released into the Gulf of Mexico as soon as they are healthy enough to return.
