From the air we breathe to the wood we use, forests are essential for our survival. They’re home to more than half of the world’s land-based species, and globally, roughly 1.2 billion people live in and around forests and rely on it for food, shelter and livelihoods. After oceans, forests are the largest storehouses of carbon.
The Greater Virunga Landscape is one of the richest ecosystems in the world in terms of species diversity and endemism. At the same time, Uganda has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world and a very high population growth rate.
