Elephants at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo are helping to solve human/wildlife conflict in the wild

ZSL’s Human Elephant Alert Technology (HEAT) project is leading the development of an affordable technology solution that uses thermal cameras to identify the heat signature of elephants. The cameras can identify elephants in real time, alerting communities to their presence. ZSL is pushing the boundaries of innovative zoo research, working together with elephants, keepers and technologists to help tackle this very real threat to wildlife.

Cold Stunned Sea Turtles Rescue

Last week, as Texas experienced unprecedented freezing conditions from Winter Storm Uri, 37 green sea turtles were rescued along the Texas coast. Working with our partners at Texas A&M Galveston, the Houston Zoo’s veterinary staff were responsible for overseeing the care and treatment of these wild sea turtles before they can be released back into the wild. After evaluation, 25 of the recovered sea turtles were released back into the warmer waters in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, Feb. 21.
