Icon Of Asia: Philippine Eagle

The Philippine Eagle(Pithecophaga jefferyi), also known as the Monkey-Eating Eagle or Great Philippine Eagle is an endangered bird of prey that is found in Asia. 

Physical Characteristics

An adult Philippine Eagle has a “spiky” crest of feathers on its head. Its crown, crest and nape(back of the neck) are tan with black streaks; the upperparts are brown with tan and cream-edged feathers; the underparts are creamy-white. with chestnut streaks on the sides of the throat and thighs. The feet are yellow, The cere is a dull greenish color, and the irises are bluish-gray.

Our western lowland gorilla baby naming contest launched last month giving anyone who donated during the contest period (May 24 – June 10) the exclusive opportunity to vote on the name of our female gorilla baby. The results are in and we are thrilled!

Crossing New Mexico

Wildlife crossings are a critical tool in protecting bighorn sheep, elk, mountain lions, pronghorns, Mexican gray wolves, and more. New Mexico is considering a plan to enhance wildlife movement corridors and build underpasses and overpasses that could make our roadways safer for animals and people alike.

This short film highlights three priority crossing locations: On Around Santa Ana Pueblo, in the Peloncillo Mountains near Steins, NM, and on Highway 285 near Tres Piedras, NM.
