Huge, good news coming out of Florida recently with the official designation of the Everglades to Gulf Conservation Area, the newest addition to the National Wildlife Refuge System. This is a tremendous win for the more than 100 threatened and endangered species that call this habitat home, including the world’s only breeding population of the endangered Florida Panther. But it can’t all be good news in Florida…
Defenders of Wildlife is calling on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to veto a proposed bill that would allow residents to shoot and kill Black Bears on their property without penalty. Scattered across the state in several populations separated by urban developments and road networks, Florida’s Black Bears are still recovering and need Gov. DeSantis to veto HB 87. Moving from the coast to the mountains to end on a high note.
This month, Colorado legislators took a first step towards safeguarding the future of the North American Wolverine in the lower 48 with the introduction of a bill that would authorize the reintroduction of the species to the state’s mountains. Defenders and its allies have fought for the wolverine for 20 years. The animal was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 2023, following six rounds of successful litigation dating back as far as 2000.
