Australia… A tropical paradise. But the oceans surrounding this island continent conceal sinister undercurrents. These pristine waters are home to some of the deadliest creatures known to man.

From the supreme strength and terrifying jaws of the world’s largest flesh-eating sharks to an eclectic collection of marine assassins that wield lethal chemical weapons…lurking just beneath the surface is a raft of unscrupulous cold-blooded killers. With a bloodlust for warm-blooded victims, the Great White Shark is one of the most feared predators on the planet… It is the undisputed kingpin in these waters. Preferring a subtler approach, one of the most toxic creatures in the animal kingdom – the Box Jellyfish. Striking from out of the blue… Its victims are taken unaware… And rarely live to tell the tale. The perfect assassin. Of course, there are other unseen assailants amongst the reef community. Impeccably concealed on the seafloor, the Reef Stonefish is an ambush predator… Lying in wait for hapless passers-by, it’s equally equipped to defend itself from would-be attackers. While camouflage is an effective survival strategy, it is not the only method of self-defense. The Blue-lined Octopus clearly advertises its deadly nature with a neon-blue warning signal. And just in case this vivid warning is ignored… Its venomous bite is 10,000 times more toxic than cyanide. When lacking chemical weapons, it helps to pack a powerful wallop. The Peacock Mantis Shrimp is a puny pugilist with a ferocious attitude. But while it punches well above its weight, it has nothing on the Tiger Shark, a neighbourhood bully that will attack just about anything that crosses its path. Exhibiting a softer touch, the flamboyant Lionfish appears an unlikely predator… But don’t be fooled. This femme fatale literally eats her victims alive. While many predators in these waters live life in the fast lane, the Crown of Thorns Starfish and a Giant Triton take part in a deadly slow speed pursuit that one will not survive. With such nefarious characters lurking, thankfully the reef offers many nooks and crannies in which to hide. Unfortunately, when Olive Sea Snakes and Anglerfish are around, nowhere is safe. And just when the coast appears clear, one of the world’s deadliest creatures emerges. It’s neither a shark, nor a snake… It is, in fact, a snail. But don’t scoff… The venom of the Geographer Cone Snail is one of the most toxic in the animal kingdom… For which there is no cure.

So when next holidaying on an Australian beach… You should remember one thing… The crystal clear waters of this island paradise are both beautiful… And deadly!
