Cambodia’s Hidden Wonders: The Mysterious River | Mysteries Of The Mekong 107

This YouTube video was produced by Love Nature.

Cambodia, nestled entirely within the Mekong basin and bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, is a land shaped by the river’s influence. The Mekong divides the country into two halves, with its tributaries and seasonal flooding affecting the landscape far beyond its banks. In the dry season, young animals are learning survival skills, like a small family of Northern Yellow Cheeked Gibbons(Nomascus gabriellae), coping with the loss of their alpha male, as the mother teaches her infant acrobatic skills essential for survival. The Mekong also separates primate species, with the Black-Shanked Douc(Pygathrix nigripes) found only on its eastern side, and an impressive population of 42,000 living in a secluded forest. Along the river, creatures like the River Tern(Sterna aurantia) and nutrient-absorbing butterflies thrive, while high above, Cambodia’s rare national bird, the Giant Ibis(Pseudibis gigantea), relies on the health of the environment it watches over. Cambodia is a biodiversity hotspot, safeguarding some of the last strongholds of unique species within its pristine habitats.
