Conserving Biodiversity: Part 1

Join our Director of CCI, Lindsay Rosa, in Montreal at COP15 – the 2022 Convention on Biological Diversity. With over 1 million species at risk of extinction we need to take bold action to conserve biodiversity, and life as we know it, now and for future generations.

Video Transcript:

I’m Dr. Lindsay Rosa, Director of our Center for Conservation Innovation at Defenders of Wildlife here in Montreal, Canada, at COP15, where leaders from all over the world are working together to set targets that will hopefully put us back on track for recovering global biodiversity.

They have their work cut out for them. There are 1 million species threatened by extinction in the coming decades.

Humans are at the core of all five drivers of biodiversity loss: invasive species, pollution, overexploitation, climate change, and land and sea use change. And we all need to be part of the solution.

The United States is not a party to the Convention on Biological Diversity, but that does not exempt it from bold action.

Demonstrating decisive global leadership means adopting a national biodiversity strategy that will elevate the biodiversity crisis as a national priority and set a comprehensive, coordinated effort for tackling the crisis at hand.

There is absolutely no question we need to conserve our biodiversity. It is the foundation of all life, of human health, healthy economies and ecosystem services.

And we need to take bold action to ensure it is conserved now and for future generations.
