Sea Shepherd Conservation Society: Guardians of the ocean

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a non-profit marine conservation organization dedicated to protecting ocean wildlife from illegal fishing and destructive activities. Sea Shepherd USA operates a key hub in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Washington, USA, while Sea Shepherd Global, headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, oversees international efforts.

Mission

  • Defend ocean wildlife: Sea Shepherd prioritizes the protection of all marine species, from whales to the smallest sea creatures.
  • Protect marine habitats: The group combats ocean pollution, opposes commercial development that destroys coastal nesting sites, and challenges offshore drilling and invasive fisheries.
  • Uphold international laws: Working with law enforcement and governments worldwide, Sea Shepherd helps stop illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, bringing poachers to justice.

History

Founded in 1977 in Vancouver, Canada, by Captain Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd emerged from Watson’s vision for aggressive marine conservation. A Canadian activist born in 1950, Watson was an early member of Greenpeace, participating in its founding campaigns against whaling and sealing. His belief in direct-action tactics, such as physically disrupting illegal fishing operations, clashed with Greenpeace’s non-violent philosophy, leading him to leave and establish Sea Shepherd. In 1978, Watson secured funding from Cleveland Amory of the Fund for Animals to purchase the first vessel, named Sea Shepherd. His leadership drove high-profile campaigns, particularly against Japanese whaling, earning him both global recognition and controversy, including legal battles and accusations of eco-terrorism. In 2022, Watson parted ways with Sea Shepherd to form the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, but his legacy as a bold conservationist endures. Today, the organization operates in multiple countries, forming a global movement for marine conservation.

Global impact

Sea Shepherd has halted poaching and habitat destruction in countries like Ecuador, Indonesia, Italy, Liberia, and Mexico. Tensions with nations like Japan, due to their heavy fishing practices, have led some allied countries to restrict Sea Shepherd’s operations.

Fleet

Known as Neptune’s Navy, Sea Shepherd’s fleet comprises multiple ships and smaller boats used in ocean conservation campaigns. Key vessels managed by Sea Shepherd Global include M/Y Steve Irwin, M/Y Ocean Warrior, M/Y Bob Barker, M/Y Sam Simon, and M/Y Brigitte Bardot.

Tactics and recognition

Sea Shepherd employs direct-action tactics, leading to numerous arrests, vessel seizures, and confiscations of illegal nets. These methods have sparked controversy, with some countries labeling them “eco-terrorists.” The organization has earned accolades like Liberia’s Distinguished Service Medal and Ecuador’s Amazon Peace Prize for its efforts.
